“A Touch of Glory”
“See what love the Father, has given us, that we should be called children of God, and so we are.” (1 John 3:1a RSV)
Dear Members and Friends,
There's an old story about a man who walks by a construction site and sees workmen pushing wheelbarrows, each filled with an enormous stone. He asks one what they're doing. "What does it look like?" He says with a sneer, "hauling rocks."
Unsatisfied with that answer, the passerby asks another construction worker the same question. The workman doesn't bother looking up. "We're putting up a wall."
Frustrated, the man tries one last time. "I say there," he asks the next fellow, "can you tell me what you men are doing here?" The workman puts down his wheelbarrow, wipes his forehead and says with a broad smile, "We're building a cathedral."
Here are three men, all doing the same job. One is hauling rocks. One is putting up a wall. One is building a cathedral.
This story says a lot about the attitude that each of us brings to our lives... or could if we were willing to change our perspective. Christians see and live life from the perspective of eternity. We are a kingdom people. The work we are doing for Jesus can bring a touch of glory to others. Because Jesus has come as Savior and been made manifest to the world we are called by faith live out our baptism as God’s beloved sons and daughters. The journey to the cross is seen from the perspective of transfiguration glory, and Easter resurrection. The choice is yours. You can haul rocks. You can put up walls. Or you can build a cathedral.
If you would like to learn how to add a touch of glory to your life plan now to join us for midweek worship during Lent. It begins at 1st UMC on Ash Wednesday, February 22, with a meal at 5:15 p.m. with worship and the imposition of ashes at 6:15 p.m. Ecumenical Services will begin February 29 at St. Mary’s Church with a meal at 5:15 p.m. and worship at 6:15 p.m. This year’s theme for worship and Bible Study will be: “God’s Gift of Forgiveness” from the Psalms. An ecumenical choir is being planned.
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Kevin R. Dunn
